PREAMBLE
The Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS) Council may confer the grade of a Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FNMS) on a member who
a) is distinguished in his/her area(s) of research (as evidenced by outstanding contributions in some branche(s) of Mathematics),
b) renders or has rendered services that promote the aim and objectives of the Society,
c) fosters the development and application of Mathematics in the Nigerian society.
The main goals of the award are to
a) boost the morale of mathematicians of Nigerian origin and entrench excellence in the profession,
b) support the attainment of leadership positions by mathematicians in their institutions and society in general. This document describes the processes of nomination and selection of candidates for the award of FNMS. Elevation to the grade of FNMS shall be done every two years on the occasion of Annual Conference of the NMS.
STATUES
1. At most four members of the NMS shall be elevated to the grade of FNMS at each period of the award. In addition to these four, the President of the NMS shall automatically, upon being elected as the President, be elevated to the grade of Fellow of the NMS if he/she is not already a FNMS.
2. Presentation to a member of NMS elevated to the grade of FNMS shall consist of
a) a plaque bearing the logo of the NMS, name of recipient and purpose of the award;
b) a certificate of conferment of the award.
3. The Council of NMS shall constitute a five-member FNMS Award Committee, consisting of respected, credible, and unbiased members of the Society who have attained the grade of 3 FNMS and who are not Council members. Gender sensitivity should not be sidetracked in setting up such a committee.
4. There shall be a Chairperson and a Secretary of the FNMS Award Committee. Names of all members of the Committee remain anonymous until the award of FNMS at the Annual Conference of NMS (of that year).
5. A call and schedule for nomination of candidates for FNMS award should be made known by NMS Secretariat at a time considered appropriate by NMS Council. It is expected that in the year of award, the deadline for nominations shall be March 31.
6. Nominations of candidates for FNMS award should be submitted to NMS Secretariat. Submissions should contain
a) candidates’ names and their affiliations,
b) the description of the work/contributions that qualifies the candidates for the award,
c) references to the candidates’ important publications.
7. To nominate a candidate for the award of FNMS, the following must be observed:
a) a Fellow Nomination Form designed by the NMS should be filled by a nominator. Submission of the Form shall be accompanied with
i. a cover letter that summarizes the compelling reasons for the nominee to be elevated to the grade of FNMS
ii. a curriculum vitae of the nominee, which should not be more than fifteen (15) pages.
iii. a short citation of the nominee, explaining the nominee’s accomplishments.
b) the nominator of a candidate must be a PhD in Mathematics/Mathematical Sciences, a sound researcher and mentor, and must be a member of the NMS for at least ten (10) years, consecutive or not.
c) nomination of a candidate must be endorsed by two holders of FNMS, the endorsement should be done at the appropriate portion provided for such in the Fellow nomination form.
